When a Time-and-Materials contract makes sense

Your requirements are still evolving

Your requirements are still evolving

The direction is set, while some requirements come from early releases and user feedback. Time & Material keeps the plan open to change without stopping development.

You're in discovery or R&D mode

You're in discovery or R&D mode

You’re testing a concept, building a prototype, or checking whether the idea works technically. Each answer helps you choose what the team works on next.

The project evolves, and priorities change

The project evolves, and priorities change

New requests move one task ahead of another. The team follows the order you set under the existing agreement.

Your project needs to start fast

The team can begin with the first agreed tasks while the remaining requirements are defined during development.

What's inside a
time and materials contract

Plan the next step with feedback
Control over the roadmap
Adjust the workload as needed
Move to the next idea faster
image
Early releases show what needs attention next, helping you choose where the team should focus
image
Each hour is linked to an approved task, so you can review what was completed and how long it took
image
Increase or reduce the amount of work for the next period based on current deadlines and budget

When one direction gives you enough answers, the team can shift to the next without revising the full project plan

How a time and materials contract works

01 — Tell us where you're headed

icon

Bring whatever you already have: a brief, project materials, or initial ideas. Together, we define the first priorities and agree on the initial stage.

02 — Set the rate and shape the team

icon

You meet the proposed specialists and see why their experience fits the work. Development begins after you approve the team and hourly rates.

03 — Work in sprints, review the progress

icon

At the end of each sprint (2–4 weeks), you review what has been completed and decide what comes next. New priorities move into the following sprint.

04 — Track hours, pay for what's done

icon

The report shows the completed tasks, hours, and cost for the period. You have the figures before approving the next stage.

Vilmate makes T&M easier to manage

Ready for enterprise requirements

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is part of how we work. You get established rules for data access, project information, and security responsibilities from day one.

Senior stack expertise

You get senior engineers with experience in your industry and technology stack. We assemble the team around your project, and you approve every specialist before development starts.

Changes without paperwork

New tasks and revised priorities go straight into the work plan, so decisions turn into development faster. If your company has its own approval process, we work within it.

Work we've shipped this way

Real products built the same way — hour by hour, priorities set by the client, scope shaped as things changed.

Questions clients ask
before they start

How is a time and materials contract different from fixed price?
With Fixed Price, you agree on the work, total cost, and delivery timeline before development starts. With Time & Material, you pay for hours worked and can change features or priorities during development.
Won't an open-ended budget spiral out of control?
No, it won't. You approve the priorities for each sprint and decide what the team works on next. Spending stays tied to the tasks you choose.
How do you bill, and how often?
Invoices are usually issued monthly at agreed hourly rates. Each invoice shows the work completed during that period.
Can we start without a finished specification?
Yes, and many clients do. A clear direction and the first priorities are enough to begin. The remaining requirements are defined during development.
Can we switch to a different model later?
Yes. A project can begin with Time & Material and move to a Dedicated Team or Fixed Price when its requirements and delivery plan become more predictable.
